Saginaw Plate Glass Factory
Est. around the turn of the century, at one time it was the largest manufacturer of plate glass in the united states. after it was bought out by the Ford Motor Co. in the mid 1930s it was closed within 2 years.
For a small time in the 1940s the site was leveled and operated as a small airport. After that the area served as a landfill.
Its GPS cordinates are 43,23.60N 083,.59.86W It streaches south from west michigan ave. to the tittabawassie river. If you find Legends bar just look across the road. you will be loking right at it.
Leachate in this area has known high concentrations of arsnic, there is coal ash about 1 meter thick over the 10 acre site and the background radiation averages 233 ur/hr. I am not sure if the high background is from the coal ash, or if the site is contaminated in some other way, some thoughts include production of vasoline glass with uranium salts added for color. Vasoline glass glows bright green under shortwave UV Light. Though there are literally tons of green glass on the site I have not found any vasoline glass. Another theory is that thorium may have been added to the glass to reduce the refractive index. Still just a theory.
